As an anime fan, the first word I learned to recognize was "nani," which indicates the interjection: "What?!"
Other phrases we pick up fast are:
Bakana - "Impossible!"
Hai - "Yes sir!" or "Okay!" or "Affirmative!"
My best guess for the translation for "nani-yo" (yes, I admit I guessed) was "What are you doing?" or "How's it going?" I could be wrong.

I'm wondering: did you publish this in the paper. If so, did you explain it? The problem here is that 1) you risk being offensive, 2) it doesn't quite work without a bit of explanation, and 3) the fact that you present a phrase that you admit you guessed at. I would consult an actual person who speaks a language before you print it. A little slip in translation could be a big slip in meaning.
