Old OC Redraws in progress

I decided to redraw some old OCs I used to use as a cartoonist for the Eastern Echo.  Here are the ones I’ve finished so far:
Little Johnny, principle canine character, house pet.

Bess Milkcowski, DVM, Psychiatry.  Bovine psychiatrist and self proclaimed rumination specialist.

Detail of Bess Milkcowski’s redraw.

The wary bovine

Now, if you know me, you know my specialties in drawing are wolves and cows.  I also draw a lot of humans, and I dabble in drawing sheep, cats, and other creatures, but mostly it's cows and wolves.

Okay, so it's overwhelmingly wolves.  So here are some cows for a change: purple, Holstein, and Hereford, along with the original line drawing.

These three are, of course, built on the same line work.  All these designs are exported from the same file, with each pattern being an individual layer that can be turned on or off.

I also have a solid color filling in positive space in its own layer for a basically-designed cow with no spots, as the purple one is made.

You may also notice the shading, which is achieved once again with a separate layer using the airbrush tool and the blending toggle set to "Multiply"  Since this is made in Clip Studio Paint, I can tweak the color of the shading.  You might notice a difference between the shadows on the Hereford and Holstein designs.  The Holstein's shadows are slightly blue and the Hereford's are slightly purplish.

Desktop background - "Scruffy Greets the Neighbors"

"Scruffy Greets the Neighbors"
A scruffy mutt comes to call on his bovine neighbors in the field for his usual play date.

A few recent works

"Cow Cuddles"
Formatted to the exact dimensions of my MacBook Pro screen.
(1440 x 900 pixels)

Karsten takes a nap next to a cow.  Created at the suggestion of +Emperor Kraglint (Craig Wilson), an author with whom I have the occasional coffee meeting.

"The Many Faces of Isolda Steinbrecher"
Also formatted to the dimensions of my computer screen.

Feel free to use them both as desktop backgrounds, if it floats your boat to do so.

 "Shared Solitude"
Not formatted to specific dimensions or resolution.

The following are from a year or so ago.
I was planning to apply for employment at an animation studio, or at least to add them to my portfolio.
There were going to be a lot more panels...
 ...a lot more of them.
They were for the opening scene of J.R.R. Tolkein's children's story Roverandom.

Udder Cream - Vegan Skin Care Product?

Udder Cream advertises that it contains no milk or bovine products.  So... is it a vegan product?

Probably not, considering the alpha-testers were dairy cattle.

Not that I care much—I'm not a vegan.

Dairy/Beef and Pork Sell Out Chicken

A little bit of fun with the Annual Manchester Chicken Broil, which usually takes place in the mid- to late-summer.  My latest postcard design for tourists in Manchester.

Update

Sorry I haven't been updating regularly.  I've been busy around the house and with job hunting and such things as these, but I'm still hoping to update twice a week (never less than once).  I've also added my twitter updates so I can tell you how Wolfram is coming along without intruding on the comics.

In the meantime, enjoy this comic, the raw material for my second postcard design:

And feel free to go over old memories of Smile and Wag from the Eastern Echo (in other words, earlier posts from this blog).

SparkyART Postcard: "Warm, Sunny Michigan"

Greetings from Warm Sunny Michigan!

Thinking about designing postcards for the Michigan area...admittedly, I need to experiment with different fonts, since this one isn't quite what the doctor ordered for what I'm going for.

(I'm posting this postcard because I sadly don't have a comic prepared for today.  Maybe I'll have another postcard on Friday?  Got one already thought up. [wag, wag, wag.] )

Milkcowski's New Patient.

This is a pun... a double pun... a poorly executed double pun, but still...
Oh, yeah: as you can see, the shading is awful.  I considered doing it in color, but when I did,  it just didn't look right that way either.  I was thinking of making this into a short series of comics,  but Jonathan isn't supposed to comprehend the bovine language.  What could they possibly talk about?

Up on the Wrong Side...part III (the anti-climax)

This is the last of the ones I did for this storyline. It's kinda cheesy that I didn't finish, but, ya know...

I used the grass brush tool in Photoshop for the grass in the second panel. I kinda liked it at first, but...I don't any more. I should have done what I did in the last one.

Upon reflection, I probably should have made the caption panel a color other than white.

Up on the Wrong Side...part II (Cream intervenes)

Here's cream again, this time as interventionist. Funny thing is that she's no psychiatrist...just a sage old cow.

Anyway, this was it in color. There's another version, but this looks better, I think.

Up on the Wrong Side

*gasp* Color!

It may be a while until you see color again. The version I submitted to the Echo was done with dots and wasn't very impressive, plus the clouds weren't in it.

So, yeah, Dr. Milkcowski wakes up, and...you know how it is when you see your face in the mirror after a hard night.

Kosher?

I'm not sure how the cattle in Dr. Milkcowski's pasture put Little Johnny up to this...and I don't know why Little Johnny feels compelled to comply...but it's funny, and that's all that matters. What I do know is that I'm not satisfied with the dot patterns in the sky. In a while, you will see that I've started using gradients and grayscale color fields. One thing I do like is the weird angle from which the second panel is drawn.

Language Barrier

Enter Cream, the mid- to late-life Jersey cow with a string of pearls around her neck. Apparently friends with Dr. Spot; their common bond is probably that they both know Dr. Milkcowski. I used some cut-and-paste for this one. You may notice that both the first and the third frames are exactly the same, pixel for pixel.

Thanks, Jake!

So, Jake, you want me to dispense with the frivilous talk and start posting comics, eh?  All right, then!  Here are another couple of comics:...

I actually never was a fan of horror flicks till Jacob started showing them to me. I still have a weak stomach, but some of those classic horrors, like the gothic kind...they're all right. This comic was drawn long before I ever saw any horror films.

I don't really believe in global warming enough to go all ballistic about how big companies are evil for burning so much fuel and putting greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere... anyhow, whether you believe in global warming or not... aw, never mind.

This was especially made for Saint Patrick's day at the student newspaper at Eastern Michigan.
